Gangi Dante

In the heart of Sicily lies the farm of the Gangi family, who are dedicated to the organic cultivation of the unique ‘Puanta’ variety of oregano.

This aromatic herb is a cross between oregano and marjoram, and is prized for its distinctive flavour profile of sweet, spicy and citrus notes.

The Gangi farm is situated at the base of the Madonie mountains, a protected National Park. This sublimely rugged terrain not only offers a spectacular view, it also provides the ideal growing conditions for this oregano. While the craggy peaks shelter the farm, the rich volcanic soil and the dazzling Sicilian sun allow the oregano to develop its intense flavour.

The Gangi farm is a local operation, with many residents from nearby villages employed by the family. The oregano is harvested by hand and dried whole until dry but not brittle. In this way, the essential oils are retained which gives the dried herb a wonderfully vivid colour quite different to commercially manufactured dried herbs. The oregano stems are then either tied in bouquet bunches, or stripped of their fragrant leaves which are lightly crushed.
