The Amarelli family in Rossano, Calabria have been making the highest quality artisan liquorice since 1731. According to the ‘Encyclopedia Brittanica’ the best liquorice in the world comes from Calabria.
Amarelli liquorice is serious liquorice and was awarded a gold medal by the ‘Society of Italian Chemists’ in 1987.
It is made from root of the liquorice plant ‘Glycerrhiza glabra’ which grows wild along the Calabrian coast in southern Italy. Amarelli make a pure, harder style liquorice than the sweet molasses confectionery style or salty Dutch version.
