Laguiole
Laguiole is the name given to cutlery manufactured in the Aveyron region of Southern France bearing the signature bee. The original pocket knife design dates from the early 19th century based on a farmer's knife from the Laguiole village.
In 1829 Jean-Pierre designed and made knives with the forged bee being the distinctive mark. Local legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte's imperial seal was offered to the Laguiole town as a token of his gratitude for the men's courage during battle.
Following this colourful tradition Laguiole-style cutlery, corkscrews, cheese implements and pocket knives are today manufactured in Thiers and small artisan production still thrives in Laguiole.
